Valor vs. Discretion

By ten o’clock, we were in the eighties and well on own way to a predicted heat index of a hundred-and-one. My occasional bits of work in the un-shaded parts soon had my clothes soaked with sweat. Continue reading

Five Generations of Sawdust

Whatever it is, it is joy to me, sharing this talent and interest of my father and my grandfather. Teaching my grandson and seeing him perform the work of my hands. Continue reading

Well-Grounded

It is not that I am nostalgic about the beginnings of the Twentieth Century; I have no desire to land in the swirling fevers that followed the Civil War, Bleeding Kansas or the age of excess that preceded WWI and the Great Depression. I do, however, like to see the occasional downtown that does not look like an architectural junkyard. Continue reading

Bailout

On the other hand, being a privileged person in a privileged society, I believe there are other options. A More Challenging Pattern

In this one, I am reminded that we may, from time to time, find ourselves in the sublime pursuit of some goal or another that seems to elude, evade and otherwise overcome our finest efforts. We should not forget that in some of those situations in which it seems that what we are trying to do is quite impossible, there may be a simple explanation. Continue reading

Live and Learn

It strikes me that we seem to learn pretty quickly from some experiences, such as adjusting chain length on a porch swing. Then, from others, we can be as dense as a doorstop. Continue reading

Conquering the Enemy

The new drain for the new kitchen sink had slowed up considerably of late. Water no longer ran out after a load of dishes was done; it seeped. In addition to the speed issue, there was some concern about proper dispersion. Continue reading

Gutter Check

With skies darkening and the forecast calling for thunderstorms, I made sure that the flexible extension tube was connected to the elbow at the bottom of the downspout. “Ready for rain now,” I thought, Continue reading

Good Investment

But when twenty bucks can drastically lower the risk of cutting into a two-hundred-and-forty volt electrical line that could unleash virtually unlimited amperage to surge through all of your vital organs, that’s too good a deal to pass up.
